Stationary air conditioning and heating
Like almost all electric cars, LIGHTstern campers also offer the option of operating the air conditioning when stationary. Regardless of whether you want to heat or cool.
To use the air conditioning system, you can put the vehicle in drive mode by pressing the start button. The air conditioning then runs in exactly the same way as when you are driving.
However, bear in mind that all vehicle systems are active and consume electricity. Depending on the weather, the air conditioning can draw up to 2 kW of power (but usually less). After a few hours, that can add up to quite a bit of energy. So keep an eye on the battery’s state of charge!
As far as cooling in summer is concerned, the LIGHTstern Polaris works in the same way as when driving. When it comes to heating, however, the Polaris has a separate electric auxiliary heater installed in the back. This is powered by the traction battery (as is the induction hob).
To operate the auxiliary heater, the vehicle must also be set to driving mode or at least be switched on during charging. Once the “ProPower Onboard” system has been activated, electricity is then available for the heating or the hob.
(It makes sense to switch off the air conditioning in the cab to save electricity if you are using the heating in the living area).
Application area of the heater
The electric heater in combination with the sheep’s wool insulation provides pleasant warmth down to a perceived temperature of around 3 degrees (also known as wind chill, the influence of wind on the perceived cold). In such conditions, a maximum power consumption of 20 % of the battery over 12 hours can be expected, which makes it suitable for use on cool nights.
In even colder temperatures, the vehicle heating can also be activated to keep the interior at a pleasant temperature. Although this leads to higher power consumption, it also enables use at sub-zero temperatures. Basically, anything is possible as long as the amount of electricity required for the respective scenario is taken into account and it is ensured that the battery is charged accordingly.
